X-Files (2016) Episode 1 - First Impressions

As a kid I had a deep curiosity for anything to do with aliens and UFO’s. I remember many weekends going with my Dad to the local library to take out all of the UFO conspiracy books with the coolest pictures.
Id flip the pages in amazement and probably learned how to read with those books about Project Blue Book and the Roswell cover up. That curiosity made me latch on to the X-Files as soon as I became aware of it. Every Sunday I would be in heaven with The Simpsons and King of the Hill running into an hour of alien spookiness. I’m really surprised my parents always let my brother and I stay up at watch it at such a young age. I’m sure it didn’t help my childhood crippling fear of aliens, but thanks anyway Mom and Dad!

In my early 20’s I started to collect the X-Files DVD’s, and with a more mature head learned to really appreciate the show for its awesome direction and storytelling. After watching all 9 seasons over and over again I’ve always been left wanting more than the movie that was release several years ago. I would regularly search Google throughout the year to find any news of new X-Files, and for a long time it was just crickets. Until last year when it was announced
that Chris Carter, with Fox, would be creating a 6 episode mini-series continuing the story of the show. And after a lot of waiting the new series finally premiered last night!

I must say overall, as an X-Files fanboy, I was mostly happy with what I saw!  The first episode starts with a great recap introduction
which really delivers with catching up old fans and new viewers to the careers of former FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, reprised by actors David Duchovny (Red Shoe Diaries, Californication) and Gillian Anderson (Hannibal, Last King of Scotland).  The intro was very well done with a moody narration by Agent Mulder, which was common in the old series. Right away you can tell that there have been a lot of changes in the lives and careers of our favorite FBI agents but they look great and slip quite seamlessly back into their rolls, both as actors and characters.

Without giving too much away, much of the first episode is tying the old X-Files into our digital time. With a lot of attention given towards a new character: YouTube right-wing conspiracy theorist Tadd O’Malley, played by Joel McHale (Community, Ted). The O’Malley Character adds a good presence to the show and feels like a natural X-Files character.

Along with new characters we also see a few old faces such as A.D. Skinner, reprised by Mitch Pileggi (Sons of Anarchy) and more that I won’t mention without running the risk of giving away too much. Though much of the show was great, it was not without its short comings. Some awkward dialogue choices and some over explaining of certain events peaked at only a 4/10 on the annoying scale but really did not ruin the overall experience.

I’m excited to keep watching and see where Carter and the crew are going to take this series for the rest of its 6 episode run. Many people were not satisfied with the first episode, though there's a good chance its just the usually awkwardness that comes from any shows first episode. For a premier I’m giving a tasteful 8 Krycek’s out of 10!

Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens Review

For months I have been waiting with faded breath. Watching every teaser, every trailer, and every late night talk show interview. My inner child has been bouncing off the walls of my subconscious for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After seeing the film on Saturday, I’d say I feel quite fulfilled. You see as a lifelong Star Wars fan I, and I’m sure many other fans, felt a small amount of worry when it came to the idea of more new Star Wars, after the disappointment of the prequel trilogy. 

Now I’m not saying the prequel movies were absolutely horrible, they just were not to the same quality of the originals in terms of story and acting. No one can deny that the special effects, even to today’s standards, still look great in those movies. But the use of actors Jake Lloyd and Haiden Christianson annoy many fans, as well as the directional choices for Anakin Skywalker’s emotional moments. So it was no wonder that I and many other fans were initially hesitant. But the saving grace was J.J. Abrams taking the captains seat. Abrams has definitely put in his time and produced a lot of fantastic work in television and film. Notable to science fiction fans, is his recent reboot of the Star Trek franchise with two well received films. The idea of a talent like J. J. Abrams taking over from the aging George Lucas made many sigh with relief.

But who really knows in the end? A movie can seem perfectly lined up to be a smash hit and end up falling way short. Look at Water World! So I had to see for myself, I had to reserve my tickets and get this scratching Star Wars monkey off of my back. I booked my seats for an AVX theatre back in my home town and planned it all out with my old Star Wars bro Chris. I was ready.

On the 18^th, I white knuckled my whole hour long drive, as visions of storm troopers danced in my head. Weather stayed calm, traffic was dead, and everything felt in line. I got into town, picked up my tickets and met up with my friend without a hitch. A little while later, it was finally here (pinch me). I leaned back in my seat and focused in with fingers crossed and bladder empty.

For those who don’t know, The Force Awakens is the 7^th installment in the multi-billion dollar Star Wars franchise. The film stars Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones, Bladerunner) as Han Solo, Adam Driver (Inside Llewyn Davis, Girls) as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley (Scrawl) as Rey, John Boyega (Attack the Block, Imperial Dreams) as Finn, as well as returning cast members Carrie Fisher (The Blues Brothers, 30 Rock) as Princess Leia, and Mark Hamill (Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Joker) as Luke Skywalker.

          
Now, what made The Force Awakens a great experience for me was having almost no details about the plot before seeing the film. And for the most part many Star Wars fans are opting to not reveal ANY plot points and keep explanations vague. I will do the same. Overall, Star Wars The Force Awakens was a brilliant film. For fans of the series, there is enough of everything that is required of a Star Wars movie but without making it inaccessible to the casual movie-goer.

The new cast members, as well as the returning cast, were all top notch. There was none of the cheesy, “bad” acting, that the prequel trilogy films were full of. Standing out in the Force Awakens is the tough and beautiful Rey who is a constant surprise and joy throughout the film. The CG in all points and aspects were absolutely top notch, as well as the cinematography. Overall the soundtrack was composed of many of the themes Star Wars fans love, from veteran composer John Williams, but felt lacking new music. The only other slightly negative thought I have towards the films is that parts of the story felt extremely familiar (not giving more detail into that) but it really doesn’t take away much from the experience. Oh, and the new droid BB-8 will win you over very quickly with his cuteness

After the smoke has cleared I can say I was overall very satisfied with the film. I did not feel let down as a Star Wars fan and have become even more excited to see what Disney is going to do with Episode VIII. I suggest fans rush out now and see it before someone on Facebook ruins it for you! I give Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens 9.5 Wampa’s Stompin’!

New Videos!

   So through doing some video work with a good friend of mine over the last month I've got a little inspired to put more time into just making videos for the hell of it and see what happens. So in light of that, I decided to remake a video I posted back when I was about 18 years old of me doing a pretty disgusting trick. It's essentially me taking my fingers and bending them fully back so they touch the back of my hand.

   The original video had several thousand hits, but looked like a big bag of smashed assholes. So I figured it could be a good video for my (relatively) new channel to just remake it. I feel like it turned out pretty good. Other than the lighting, I really need to do something about the lighting in here. Either way swing over to my YouTube channel Camgore Video and see some of the crap I've been posting!

   I'm going to force myself to put out videos on either a weekly or bi weekly basis and keep my camera/editing muscles flexing. I just need to jump in! I get a lot of stupid ideas that make people around me laugh so I think it's about time I start seeing what I can do. Or fail miserably. Either way at least I'm trying!

   I'm also going to jump back into doing some movie and TV reviews starting back up with this weekends release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens! Which, as a lifetime Star Wars fan, is driving me absolutely insane with anticipation. I have faith though that Disney will not fuck this up! We'll see...

  

Summer 2015

I thought I'd take a minute just to talk about how great this summer has been and is still going to be! Now for me, the last 3 summers have been very sad and disappointing. With moving drama, relationship drama and no money I wasn't having a good time. Last summer I finally had work again, but I was so worried about cash that I just decided to do nothing but work all summer. Which was a mistake. I did literally nothing and it really took it's told on my mentally and emotionally.

So this summer I wanted to make a point of actually doing more. Dip into my bank account and actually do some things that would be fun and memorable. One mission was to be more active and keep up the weight loss track I had been on for the last 6 months, which I achieved through getting my bike fixed and hitting the Kevin Hart on his tour, which was totally TOTALLY worth the money. He was so damn funny, his next special is going to be wild. I've also made a point to try out more interesting date ideas with my girlfriend and spend more time with my friends from back home.

So far it has all been great, and has gone better than I could have expected. I am feeling more happy and fulfilled than I have in years. August has been a little slow, but my spirits are still high! Part of that probably has to do with how amazing September is going to be. First off, I'm going to Fan Expo Canada with one of my best friends. Fan Expo is like Toronto, Ontario's version of Comic Con. I've been several times and its always a huge blast. On top of that I'm also attending Riot Fest later on in the month. If you don't know Riot Fest is a touring concert festival/carinval that hosts a lot of good rock and punk acts. That is what I'm looking forward to the most and feels totally worth the $150 ticket (for 2 days so it's not that bad). I'll finally get to see some awesome bands I've like for years, but have never gotten the opportunity to see. Bands like, Rancid, D.O.A., Motorhead, Alexisonfire and the fucking Wu-Tang Clan!

I'm sure it'll be awesome and I'll be making posts about both my time at Fan Expo, as well as my weekend at Riot Fest. And I'm sure both events will be perfect oppertunities to capture some pics and video's I can post on here and YouTube!

I hope your summer has been epic. And if it hasnt? You still have 3 months to make 2015 your bitch! What I've learned is you have to own every day, and give out as much love as possible! 

 

Long Time, No Blog

So I get it, its been a stupidly long time since I wrote any sort of blog, or review or what the fuck ever. And yeah that's both bogus and lame. But my friends its time to rise from the ashes, climb that mountain, verb the adjective noun! Check this shit out! Mirrors Edge was a parkour video game released on PS3 and XBOX 360 in 2008. It was hyped up like crazy before the games release, mostly do to the 1st fast parkour moves beauty shown in the demo and trailers.
